THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
“Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” Matthew 19:13
The sacrament of baptism signifies the grace of God and the adoption into the Christian Church universal. Baptism of children witnesses to the truth that God's love claims people before they are able to respond in faith. The congregation, on behalf of the whole church, assumes responsibility for nurturing the baptized children in the Christian life, and it is for this reason that the congregation makes that promise during the service. In the Unison Prayer we also remember that we, too, were baptized and as children of God are part of the worldwide family of faith.
BAPTISM AT THE UNITED CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF LITTLE COMPTON
Members, and members of immediate relatives are welcome to have their children baptized in the church. If the parent is not a member, nor a relative of a member, they must attend several services (approximately 2-3) at our church to become more familiar with the church and its members. In addition, a time will be set up for parents to meet briefly with the minister and/or a deacon. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss church, the sacrament of baptism, Sunday school programs and explore parent's interest in membership, etc. Following these steps, baptism will be booked with the church office. All baptisms at The United Congregational Church take place during a regular Sunday morning service.
